Pay per click marketing with Trada - History

Trada started as a light bulb idea. Niel Robertson, serial entrepreneur and Trada's founder was vacationing with his parents in Scotland. They were on a boat heading into the only un-navigable whirlpool in the Northern Atlantic. The Corryvrecken has been known to have 30 foot swells and multiple whirlpools all at the same time. Sounds exactly like what you'd want to drive a boat into, doesn't it? Fortunately for us at Trada, they had calm seas that day and the long boat ride towards the edge of Jura left Niel a lot of time to think.

As their boat drove into the Corryvrecken, Niel was thinking about his own experience managing Google AdWords campaigns for one of his previous companies. He remembered two things from his experience: 1) how addictive AdWords was because of his affection for analytics and 2) how time consuming and complex it was to optimize the results into an affordable outcome. He was spending 4 hours a day in AdWords tweaking bid prices, changing ads, researching new keywords, etc.

And then it dawned on him – why become a paid search expert when there are lots people that already know how to optimize paid search campaigns. But how would he find them? And how would he know if they were doing a good job? How would he pick one over another? Once he chose one, how would he know they were doing the best job possible?

Instead, why not create a marketplace that would allow thousands of paid search experts to work on his campaign and pay each of them when they succeed. Thus the idea for Trada was literally born in an instant, on a boat, heading into a whirlpool.

Now whenever there's a tough problem to solve at Trada we send Niel into a death-defying situation to see what he comes up with. Alligator wrestling, anyone?

We're often asked why we have gumballs in the Trada logo. Trada was founded on the basic principle of the Wisdom of the Crowd – that a crowd of people working on a problem is collectively more effective than any one person could be working on the same problem. Harnessing the collective power of a crowd – in our case a crowd of Paid Search experts – is what makes Trada so effective for advertisers in our marketplace.

The classic example of the Wisdom of the Crowd is the gumballs-in-a-jar game where a group of people is asked to guess the number of gumballs in a jar. While the individual estimates vary widely, the averaged guess of each person in the crowd approximates the actual number of gumballs more accurately than the best individual guesser. We've tried the gumballs-in-a-jar game and it really works!
